Nicholette Kominos and jonna lee
Roswell Space, February 5 – March 5, 2023
By Kerry Kugelman

Alluring and dreamy, the artwork of jonna lee and Nicholette Kominos pull us into a gentle tension between spirit and matter, mind and body, an almost elemental pairing. The monochrome images and sculpture induce a gentle vertigo in the viewer with materials, presence, and clarity.

Jonna Lee’s photographs of her silhouetted shadow on a shallow pond render the reflection of sky behind her as a blank white plane, making of her silhouette a window into what lies beneath. Her shadow seems to penetrate the plane of sky, as though revealing a subconscious world teeming with life and mystery. Spare yet freighted with quiet portents of revelation, the photographs invite contemplation and introspection of this space beyond the surface.

Nicholette Kominos’ works in rubber are earth to Lee’s air, grounded with an emphatic presence of material and texture. The artist, known for working in a variety of materials, here provides an armature for the viewer’s experience, an intriguing intersection of surface and interruption. The sculpture’s surfaces vary from mottled, uneven textures to smoothly finished planes, in most cases having sculptural elements integrated on and into the rubber, mysterious interventions that hint at hidden meaning.

Elegant and thought provoking, this exhibition provides an experience of the hidden and the revealed, a delicious exploration of the intangible and tangible alike.
